Weekly Grammar Tip: Colons

A colon is a funny thing and it’s not uncommon for people to hear the word ‘colon’ and say “huh? what?” – possibly because its more informal name is “the dot dot thingy” (or a variation of this). The colon is generally used at the end of a sentence preceding a list, for example (and here’s another): “I need to buy: apples, oranges, bananas … What do you need?”

It’s pretty simple really – the main trick is to remember its name!
